Gift Shop Associate

About Nauticus 

Established in 1994, Nauticus is a maritime discovery center that hosts 350,000 visitors annually and is home to the Nauticus Museum, Sail Nauticus sailing center, Schooner Virginia, the Battleship Wisconsin and the Half Moone Cruise Terminal. Nauticus’ mission is to benefit the community through education, impactful experiences and by sharing access to maritime resources. 

Job Summary

Responsible for a variety of tasks related to selling, service, stock maintenance, receiving and display of items for sale in the Nauticus Gift Shop. Support our Nauticus mission by enhancing the visitor experience through expert customer service. Drive sales revenue to support museum programs. This is a part-time position. Employee discount and designated parking garage validation included with employment.

Reports to the Assistant Store Manager.

Essential functions

  • Greets and engages guests in dialogue to provide information about our products and services
  • Responsible for performing a variety of tasks in a specialty gift shop related to selling, customer service, stock maintenance, and merchandising
  • Process sales transactions; perform store opening and closing functions

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures
  • Working knowledge of cash management
  • Working knowledge of computer functions and cash register/credit card terminal

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Works as part of a diverse sales team and with diverse audiences and age groups.
  • Works well in a fast-paced environment under time constraints
  • Strong communication skills to receive customer concerns and answer in a calm and effective manner
  • Organizational skills; inventory management; and some merchandising knowledge

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling up to 50 lbs. Able to stand and/or walk for more than four hours per day.
  • May require work in tight spaces and use of ladders to obtain merchandise or access to work locations
  • Part-time work schedule varying between the operating hours of Tuesday thru Saturday 9am-5:30pm and Sunday 11am-5:30pm. Some nights and holidays may be required for special events.

QUALIFICATIONS

Prior experience in retail customer service.

FLSA status: This is a non-exempt position.

Job Summary

Nauticus is seeking really fun, holiday-loving ambassadors to join its WinterFest guest experience team! Are you a people-person? Would you like to spend the holidays surrounded by 650,000 lights aboard a floating battleship while listening to terrific music? Join our team! Responsibilities include providing overall support for our guests and a sharing a winning smile. You’ll have chance to greet holiday revelers, share information about programming, help us monitor attendance, and make sure everyone has a terrific time. Some cashier and ticket sale positions are also available. In its second season, WinterFest on the Wisconsin is the region’s newest holiday tradition held aboard the Battleship Wisconsin. Don’t just take our word for it – google it! This year, guests will explore an elaborate light trail with seven themed zones. Below deck, cheeky elves are making mischief and a talking Christmas tree will enchant the entire family! Do you like trains? Oh yeah – we’ve got an unbelievable train display! Live music? Yep – got that too. Hot chocolate? Last year we served more than 350 gallons!

Wed, Thursday and Sunday nights 4:45PM-9:30PM/Clear

Friday and Sat staffing 4:45PM-10:30PM/Clear

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Though WinterFest on the Wisconsin features thousands of lights, our guest experience team truly makes the event shine. You’ll have chance to greet and interact with guests and will be responsible for maintaining visitor flow around the ship. From time to time, you may be called upon to resolve minor issues, provide directions and answer questions, and serve as a member of a team dedicated to bringing the cheer this year! You’ll work alongside volunteers, entertainers, musicians, vendors and a house manager.

KNOWLEDGE

· Know how to make guests feel welcomed and appreciated

· Event coordination and/or customer service experience a plus

· Ability to recite at least one line from your favorite Christmas movie (just kidding…)

SKILLS & ABILITIES

· Ability to remain calm during active/engaging situations

· Understand the importance of exceeding guest expectations

· Ability to work with a diverse, dynamic group of people

· Ability to make independent decisions based on policies and procedures

· For cash handling/sales positions, ability to perform a variety of tasks related to selling, service, and processing sales transaction (cash, credit cards).

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

· You’ll be working in a Winter Wonderland

· Requires standing for extended periods of time; walking and climbing stairs, etc.

· Position may require you to work in small spaces below deck, including operating a toy train for thousands of delighted families!

· Position requires working closely with the general public

· Work is primarily evenings/nights, holidays and weekends. Seasonal November 10 – January 2, 2022

QUALIFICATIONS

Seriously – the most important qualification is a genuine love of people and an enthusiasm for the holiday season. Previous experience in direct customer service is preferred. Experience in events and first aid certification are preferred. If applying for one of our cashier/ticket sales positions, prior experience in retail, entertainment, ticketing and customer service is preferred.
