Sail Voyagers

summer camp for Ages 11-14, Rising 6-9th Graders

Hone your boating skills at this water-based summer camp. Campers will spend time exploring the Elizabeth River and its tributaries during this advanced sailing camp week. They’ll voyage aboard our Harbor 20 sailboats, Schooner Virginia, and other various watercraft discovering Norfolk and Portsmouth via water! Our ratio of staff to students is 3:1 making this a hands-on, engaging opportunity for your camper!

frequently Asked questions

Hands-on and feet wet

Throughout the week, campers will test their hands at crafting sailing plans, learn the basics of racing, practice Person Overboard drills and marine radio skills, use weather and tidal information to identify possible routes, and hone their skills reading nautical charts.

Students should expect to spend roughly four hours on the water per day (weather permitting) and will depart camp with a better understanding of how to have fun and be safe while boating.

Campers in groups of three or four will be taught by a trained instructor on each Harbor 20 sailboat.

While we try to give our campers a diverse experience and encourage new friendships, we will do our best to accommodate your request!

Sailing in the rain is a sail your camper is sure to remember, especially if the wind is up. However, safety is our priority, and we will not sail if lightning and thunder or any other threatening weather conditions are a factor, nor will we sail in winds above 20 knots. If poor weather occurs, land-based activities will be held until the weather clears up.

No, food is not provided. Please ensure your child brings a water bottle, bag lunch, and two snacks daily. Campers should label coolers and water bottles.

Need full-day coverage? Nauticus offers After-Care from 3 – 5:30 PM the week of July 31 – August 4 and August 7 – 11 ONLY. Campers enrolled in this program will explore the Nauticus campus.  After-Care pickups are from 5:15-5:30 PM. After-Care must be added on to your camp registration. There is an additional fee of $75/week for Sail Voyagers campers to participate in After-Care.
