Summer Camp 2021: June 21 – July 30

Welcome aboard Nauticus’ new summer camp! Our redesigned camp is packed full of nonstop hands-on and minds-on experiences!

Your child will explore the entire Nauticus campus as they dive into STEM-based activities onboard our Harbor 20 sailboats, the Schooner Virginia, the Battleship Wisconsin and inside our discovery center, Nauticus! Throughout the week, campers will test their hands at sailing up-wind, building underwater robots, exploring our new summer traveling exhibition, Going Places, and much more. Let them teach you what it takes for a 58,000-ton steel ship to float or how over 6,500 square feet of sails are controlled by a tall ship’s crew!

The ultimate ending will involve your child constructing their own makeshift boat to compete with their teammates in a regatta–encompassing all that they’ve learned during the week.

This will be your child’s new favorite week of summer.

Exploration

Campers will explore the battleship, discovery center and Schooner Virginia. Throughout the week, campers will collect marine debris from the Elizabeth River and use recycled materials to construct their own makeshift boat to be raced in the Nauticus entrance pond at the end of the week. Parents are welcome to cheer on their camper!

FAQs!

COVID 19 Update

Nauticus continues to monitor health conditions regarding COVID-19 as we receive guidance from state and local officials as we plan our 2021 Design. Build. Sail. summer camp.

The following safeguards and procedures will be in place and we will modify as guidelines are updated:

Health Check:

Prior to the start of camp, you will be asked to complete a health questionnaire as it relates to the current health of campers and families.

· Daily drop-off and pick-up will occur in the circle in front of Nauticus. Staff will direct you to drive-up when we are ready to receive campers for the day. Please stay in your vehicle.

· Upon arrival each morning campers and staff will receive contactless temperature checks. Anyone with a temperature of 100.4+ degrees will not be permitted at camp.

Safety Procedures:

· We have limited the number of campers per week and structured our activities to ensure we are able to comfortably distance ourselves throughout the day.

· Social distancing may not be possible in all activities and face coverings should be worn at all times while on campus. Mask breaks will be incorporated into the day.

· Frequent hand washing, and other sanitation safeguards will be scheduled throughout the day. Designated staff members will be responsible for daily sanitation of the program equipment and facilities.

· Campers will have their own allocated space to leave their belongings and should bring lunches in labeled coolers and water bottles to stay hydrated.

If you have any questions at this time, please let us know. We thank you for your understanding and continued support of Nauticus programming.

Pick Up/Drop Off Times & Extended-Care Details

Who will accompany my child on the sailboat?
Children in groups of three or four will be taught by a trained instructor on each Harbor 20 sailboat.
Can my child be on the same boat as his/her sibling/friend?
While we try to give our campers a diverse experience and encourage new friendships, we will do our best to accommodate your request!
What happens if it rains?

Sailing in the rain is a sail you’ll remember, especially if the wind is up. However, safety is our priority, and we will not sail if lightning and thunder or any other threatening weather conditions are a factor, nor will we sail in winds above 20 knots. If poor weather occurs, land-based activities will be held until the weather clears up.

What if my child is outside of the age criteria? Do you make exceptions?

We will be happy to add your child to our wait list for camp if they do not meet the age criteria. We will notify you no later than one week before camp if we are able to accommodate them.

For children ages 16+, please see our Learn to Sail opportunity here

Do you provide lunch?
No. Please ensure your child brings a bag lunch and a snack daily.
