MEDIA ALERT: 10, 000 Square Feet of New Battleship Wisconsin Spaces To Open As Part of 75th Anniversary Celebration Weekend

Where: Battleship Wisconsin, adjacent to Nauticus on the downtown Norfolk waterfront.

When: Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, May 19, Noon- 5 p.m.

At 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, over 10,000 square feet of new areas of the ship’s lower decks will open to the public, including the hospital, Chief’s mess, “geedunk” (snack bar), and famous “Broadway.” Other spaces have been newly interpreted.

What: Throughout 2019, the Battleship Wisconsin is celebrating her 75th anniversary year with “Their Stories. Our History. A Year-Long Celebration,” a series of engaging events that pay tribute to the brave men who served aboard her.

On May 18 & 19, the public is invited to help celebrate the ship’s legacy with two days of family activities, musical performances, refreshments and lively entertainment, including swing dancing, a sneak peek at Hurrah Player’s Dames at Sea, and performances by Good Shot Judy, the Notables and Phil Poteat. Visitors may also meet Wisconsin veterans who served aboard the ship.

Cost: Daily admission is only $7.50 each day (plus tax).

Located on the downtown Norfolk waterfront, Nauticus is a maritime science museum that explores the economic, naval, and natural power of the sea. Nauticus features hands-on exhibits, marine life, 3D movies, a Stewards of the Sea exhibit that explores the Navy’s environmental efforts, the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, the awe-inspiring Battleship Wisconsin–one of the largest and last battleships built by the U.S. Navy- and the Banana Pier Gift Shop.
