“Saluting Marine” Onboard Battleship Wisconsin Thursday, May 16
When: Thursday, May 16, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Where: Battleship Wisconsin, One Waterside Drive, downtown Norfolk.
What: The Saluting Marine, aka SSGT Tim Chambers, is stopping in Norfolk en route to the annual Memorial Day Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally in Washington, DC, which honors America’s fallen soldiers and raises awareness of POW/MIA issues. Chambers will be speaking on the fantail of the Battleship Wisconsin starting at 1 p.m. We hope to have a Warbird flyover at 1:30 as well!
Marine Corps veteran Chambers has made a name for himself by holding a single salute every year at Rolling Thunder. He began his silent vigil in 2002, standing at attention in the hot sun for up to 5-1/2 hours in his dress uniform, gloves and hat. He now travels the country to attend dedications, fundraisers, funerals, parades and patriotic services and will stop in Norfolk as part of his 2019 “Salute Across America” Tour which “honors the importance of sacrifice, courage and patriotism.”
