Meet Two Tuskegee Airmen, NASA “Hidden” (and Modern) Figures, and Local Historians during the Black History Month Celebration at Nauticus

Norfolk, Va.  – Hampton Roads has its fair share of African-American innovators and leaders who have gained national recognition and impacted American history.  In celebration of our regional contributions to Black History, Nauticus will present And Still I Rise, a special day of programming featuring African-American leaders in the history, military and science fields.  The all-encompassing event will take place on Saturday, February 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The schedule for And Still I Rise is as follows:

10:30 a.m. Presentation: “Waterways to Freedom” by historian and author Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, Interim Dean, College of Liberal Arts, Norfolk State University.
11:15 a.m. Book signing by Dr. Newby-Alexander.
1 p.m. Curious Kids Panel: “African-Americans in the Military” with Tuskegee Airmen Dr. Harry Quinton and Reverend Bill Burrell as well as members of today’s Navy.
1:30 p.m. Curious Kids Panel: “African-American Scientists” with NASA Hidden Figure Dr. Christine Darden, NASA Modern Figure Michelle Ferebee, and Dr. Deidre Gibson, Associate Professor/Chair, Department of Marine and Environmental Science, Hampton University.
2 p.m. Adults Panel: “African-Americans in the Military” with Tuskegee Airmen Dr. Harry Quinton and Reverend Bill Burrell as well as members of today’s Navy.
2:30 p.m. Adults Panel: “African-American Scientists” with NASA Hidden Figure Dr. Christine Darden, NASA Modern Figure Michelle Ferebee, and Dr. Deidre Gibson, Associate Professor/Chair, Department of Marine and Environmental Science, Hampton University.
3:30 p.m. Presentation: “Afro-Norfolk County Area Civil War Patriot Heroes” by historian and author Dr. E. Curtis Alexander, Curator, Bells Mill Historical Research and Restoration Society, Inc.
4:15 p.m. Book signing by Dr. E. Curtis Alexander.
