Kayaks Debut on Downtown Norfolk Waterfront!

Nauticus launches program geared towards residents

Norfolk, Va. – Norfolk can soon boast of an urban kayaking experience on its downtown waterfront. Beginning July 14, Nauticus will launch a kayak rental program from its Half Moone marina. Though the program will be open to anyone interested, it was developed to be another unique waterfront experience for locals.

“What could be more dramatic than staring up at a 900-foot-long battleship from a kayak?” said Stephen E. Kirkland, Nauticus executive director. “With the residential expansion happening downtown, we wanted to give locals and visitors another chance to see this community from the water.” Nauticus also operates a sailing program from its site, with a robust adult member program.

Norfolk will join the ranks of San Francisco, Chicago, Washington D.C., and Pittsburgh with this urban kayaking program. Wild River Outfitters of Virginia Beach will operate the rental program from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, starting July 14.

“We’re glad to be partnering with Nauticus on this unique, new endeavor,” said David Gracie, president of Wild River Outfitters.

Kayaks will depart from the Half Moone marina adjacent to Nauticus. Rentals cost $20 per hour for a single kayak and $30 for a double kayak. Seven-year-olds can sail with an adult; children 13 years or older may sail alone.
